Uruguay has a legacy of creativity: its cities have a rich architectural heritage and an impressive number of writers, artists, and musicians. Uruguayan's pride themselves in their form of dance, the Uruguayan tango, which originated in the neighborhoods of Montevideo in the 19th century. In addition to tango, candombe and murga are the other main styles of music heard in the country. The name Uruguay means "river of the colorful birds" , which is fitting since the country is composed of a network of 4 rivers and their deltas: the Río de la Plata, the Uruguay River, the Laguna Merín and the Río Negro. The country is fruitful and its economy is based largely on its agriculture, while the Uruguayan people are some of the most progressive, literate, and least secular in South America. Studying Spanish in Uruguay is a great bet for travelers and learners who want to enjoy South America in a country with very little tumult and plenty of great culture to offer.
