Riga is the capital of Latvia. The largest city in the Baltic States, it is a true melting pot, with diverse inhabitants including those of German, Russian, Polish and Latvian descent. This city had its earliest beginning as a trading site during the early Middle Ages. Riga rests on flat plane divided by the Daugava River. Students attending Russian schools in Riga will be treated to a stunning display of art nouveau architecture throughout Riga. This style was particularly popular at the turn of the 20th century, which coincides with much of the growth in Riga. Students can see great contrasts in the cobblestone streets in Old Town, and the glass high rises in the newer part of town. For those wanting to spend some time outdoors, Riga has many beautiful city parks. Visitors can also enjoy stopping it at local cafes or tea houses to sample some of the Latvian fair. Delicious breads and pastries are easily found, and there are many restaurants serving a wide variety of selections for more complete meals. Students taking Russian courses in Riga should also make time to visit the stunningly beautiful Opera House, both to enjoy the beauty of the building and to enjoy a wonderful performance. The climate in Riga is humid continental with January and February being the coldest months. The summers are hot and humid, a perfect time to spend strolling through the Ethnographic Open Air museum which showcases life in Latvia between the 16th and 19th centuries. Students will find Riga has both a rich historical side, and a funky modern side with great museums, shopping, dining and entertainment.
