General English courses in Scotland

This English course is for people who wish to improve their general level of English. The course concentrates on improving all aspects of your English but we strongly believe in helping you to learn to speak English well so much of your time will be spent practising listening and speaking.

This English course is for people who wish to improve their general level of English but who also want an opportunity to do a little extra work in the afternoon to practise and consolidate what they have learnt in the morning session. With small groups in the afternoon you will be able to practise speaking more and to have conversations with your teacher using some of the English you learn during your course.

The Standard General English Course takes place every morning from Monday to Friday, leaving you free every afternoon to join the Social Programme or study in our Self-Access facilities. Your morning lessons are divided into two parts and you will usually be taught by two different teachers.

On the Intensive General English Course, you will follow the same programme as the Standard General English Course in the mornings, plus three afternoon classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, which gives you the opportunity to improve your communicative proficiency through discussions, topical debates, authentic materials and video. The General English course consists of 20 lessons each week and is the least intensive option offered at Kaplan. This course allows students to improve their English while still leaving time for sightseeing and leisure during their stay.

A Semi-Intensive English course offers the balance to enjoy your destination and finish your course with a higher level of English. Semi-Intensive English Courses focus on the four main aspects of language: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

On our Combination Course, you will follow the Standard English Course in the mornings and you will also have 5 hours per week of individual one to one lessons. These are designed to meet your individual needs and requirements and offer you the ideal opportunity to work on specific language problem areas with your own teacher.

This course prepares students with the skills and strategies they need to make the transition to college and university. Students are encouraged to develop independence in a range of academic tasks.

The Intensive 35 course is the fastest way for students to improve their English skills, regardless of their starting level. The course consists of 20 lessons of general English, 7 lessons of structured study, and 8 lessons of elective English each week.

The Edinburgh Festival course is designed to help international students make the most of the theatre, music, comedy and dance performances at Edinburgh's famous annual festival of the arts, which is held in August.
